Our Rich History

About

The Svec Farm, a family-owned and operated agricultural venture, proudly stands in Eastern South Dakota. Our strategic location places us just off I-29, a vital link between the vibrant communities of Watertown and Brookings, and a mere six miles from the charming town of Estelline.
Encompassing over 500 acres, the Svec Farm boasts a rich history of hosting various enterprises over the years. Currently, our primary focus revolves around the sustainable and ethical practice of raising grassfed beef. We are dedicated to nurturing both tradition and the environment, emphasizing responsible stewardship of our resources to produce high-quality, naturally-raised beef.

A Little Of Our Story

Our history

Our history traces back to the late 19th century when the Svec Farm was established as a homestead claim in 1898. Over the years, this cherished piece of land has been faithfully passed down through generations of our family. Today, we proudly uphold the tradition of farming the same land, preserving the values and legacy that have been an integral part of our heritage for over a century.

Our Company Values

Our vision

We see ourselves as stewards of the land, committed to preserving its use for agricultural production. Sustainability is a core value at the heart of our operations, and we employ a variety of practices to achieve it. This includes holistic management with both crops and livestock, management-intensive grazing, no-till methods, and the thoughtful use of cover crops, all of which contribute to the overall well-being of the land.

Discover Our Beef

Grassfed Beef

We are pleased to offer our 100% grassfed beef for sale directly to local consumers. Our cattle are Belted Galloways, a smaller, heritage breed of cattle that finishes very well on grass, resulting in tender and juicy meat.
Our cattle graze on pasture during the growing season and enjoy hay and forage when the pastures are dormant. They have access to shelter in inclement weather but are never confined. Their care never involves the use of growth hormones or routine antibiotics. All of this adds up to lots of benefits for the land, the cattle, and ultimately, for you!

Discover Our Lamb

Lamb

We are pleased to offer pastured lamb to area customers! We raise Katahdin sheep, a breed chosen specifically for its mildly flavored meat. Our lambs have been raised from start to finish on nothing but their mothers’ milk, our lush pastures and range-grown forages, and supplemental mineral salt. They are rotated to fresh pasture nearly every day to keep them happy and healthy and to ensure they are getting a wide variety of nutrients in their diets. We have cuts of lamb in our online shop.
