I love ground lamb, but sometimes folks don’t know what to do with it.

Lamburgers are a quick and easy way to use ground lamb. But today I’m sharing my absolute favorite way to cook with ground lamb — Mediterranean Lamb Meatballs!

It’s my go-to recipe for customers and friends wondering what to do with their ground lamb and today I’m sharing it with you. The spice combination smells and tastes sooo good!

These meatballs are excellent with the suggested yogurt sauce, and also pair well with rice, pitas, and other Mediterranean staples.

You can easily make it gluten free by swapping the breadcrumbs out for potato flakes.

Mediterranean Lamb Meatballs

Adapted from Recipe Tin Eats
4 servings

  • 1 lb ground lamb
  • 1 small onion, grated, including juices
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup cilantro leaves and stems, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • Oil of choice for frying

Place all ingredients except frying oil into a bowl and mix well. Roll into 22 to 24 meatballs.

Over medium heat, heat 1 Tbl oil in large skillet. Working in batches, fry meatballs for about 8 minutes, turning to brown all sides.

Serve! Great with flatbreads and minted yogurt sauce (recipe below).

Minted Yogurt Sauce
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 clove garlic, finely minced
  • 2 Tbl fresh mint, finely chopped (or 1 Tbl dried mint)
  • Squeeze of lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Mix all sauce ingredients together and let sit at least 20 minutes. Serve with the lamb meatballs. Top with additional fresh cilantro and mint if desired.

Happy cooking to you in 2023!
